Objections By Hopelessness. John 5 One Thru Nine.

THE STORY OF JESUS HEALING A MAN AT THE POOL OF BETHESDA.

1. The Pool Of Bethesda (Verses 1-4)

  • Context: This Event Occurs After A Jewish Feast, With Jesus Visiting Jerusalem.

  • Location: The Pool Of Bethesda Is Located Near The Sheep Gate In Jerusalem. Archaeologists Have Found This Pool With Five Porches As Described.

  • Gathering Of The Sick: A Large Number Of Sick, Blind, Lame, And Paralyzed People Gathered At The Pool, Hoping For Healing. They Believed That At Certain Times, An Angel Would Stir The Water, And The First To Enter Would Be Healed. This Could Be Either A True Divine Healing Moment Or A Local Legend.

2. Jesus Questions A Lame Man (Verses 5-6)

  • The Lame Man: Among The Gathered Was A Man Who Had Been Paralyzed For 38 Years And Frequently Visited The Pool In Hope Of Healing.

  • Jesus' Choice: Jesus Noticed This Man And Chose To Address Him Specifically, Even Among The Crowd.

  • Question Of Healing: Jesus Asked Him, "Do You Want To Be Made Well?" This Was A Sincere Question, As Not All Sick Individuals Desire Healing Due To Discouragement Or Loss Of Hope. Jesus Aimed To Restore This Man's Faith.

3. Jesus Heals The Man (Verses 7-9)

  • Man's Response: The Man Explained His Helplessness, As He Had No One To Help Him Into The Pool When The Waters Were Stirred.

  • Jesus' Command: Jesus Instructed The Man, "Rise, Take Up Your Bed And Walk." Although Impossible In His Condition, The Man Responded In Faith.

  • Healing: Instantly, The Man Was Healed, Able To Carry His Bed And Walk. This Miracle Occurred On The Sabbath, Which Would Later Lead To Controversy.

This Passage Illustrates Not Only Jesus' Power To Heal But Also His Intention To Renew Faith In Those Who May Have Lost Hope.
